Delivering the future - Electric Cargo Bikes on the IOW

‘The Isle of Wight Council is inviting businesses to attend an event to support the uptake of electric-cargo bikes, driving Island companies towards a greener carbon footprint.

Following the completion of a feasibility study by Island based People Powered CIC, the council is keen to engage with businesses to share information on the opportunities for zero emission commercial deliveries.

Businesses and organisations attending the event – at Quay Arts, Newport, on 15 May between 11.30am to 3pm - can find out more about how this exciting project could help in delivering products and services across the Island using electric-cargo bikes, replacing van delivery for smaller goods, and contributing to reduced congestion and harmful emissions.

“I would urge businesses to sign up to this event to understand how central government funding can unlock the electric-cargo bike opportunity on the Island. Aside from the environmental benefits, the cost savings for using a cargo bike or trike to replace traditional vans making those short ‘last mile’ deliveries can be substantial,” said the council's active travel officer, Kayleigh Richter.

“The Island is well suited to a project of this nature; it has a growing network of traffic free trails and benefits from shorter journey distances compared to the mainland. I would also like to thank those businesses which contributed to the recent feasibility study.”

This Island initiative links with the launch of a new £2million fund set up by the Department for Transport to help companies invest in electric-cargo bikes to fulfil last mile deliveries, after the result of its recent consultation into opportunities to deliver goods more sustainably in the UK. It also builds upon recent government policy, including:

• The Last Mile - delivering goods more sustainably
• Road to Zero Strategy

If you are a business who would like to attend the event, please book your tickets at: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/cargo-bike-market-engagement-event-tickets-60297182496

This project is supported by the Isle of Wight Council’s Access Fund for Sustainable Travel programme, using funding which was secured competitively from the Department for Transport to deliver a wider programme of sustainable transport interventions being delivered through to April 2020.
